History

In the 1940s, Mr Loy Nie left his hometown of Hainan Island, China and came to Singapore. He set up a porridge stall to meet his basic needs and soon formulated his own recipe for Hainanese chicken rice together with his wife. They set up a stall in 1953 at Raymond Market, which was demolished before the construction of the Central Expressway (CTE). The stall’s chicken rice soon got famous among the locals and has since moved to the new location along Balestier Road. Although Mr Loy Nie has passed on, the chicken rice business has been passed down to the next generation and continues to prosper.

Information

To meet the needs of changing demands, the stall now sells various food items from porridges to soups to toast sets. Nevertheless, the Loy Kee Special Set remains the customers’ top favourite dish. The dish is still prepared using the traditional methods and the chilli and ginger sauce are all prepared by hand. One can attribute the taste of tradition in the Hainanese chicken rice at Loy Kee to be the key factor in the success of the business.
