History

Whampoa Market was opened in 1980 to meet the needs of the residents living in the area. This market, along with Balestier Market and Raymond Market (closed down), were among those found in Balestier many decades ago.

After 26 years without any upgrading, the local Group Representation Constituency (GRC) drafted plans to have the market upgraded in 2006. Residents living in Whampoa welcomed and strongly supported the upgrading.

After the major renovation works in 2007 which cost 10 million dollars, the much awaited food centre opened in December 2007. The place has been made bigger to allow for more stalls (which now houses over 100 stalls), and the pathways have been made wider to allow more customers to visit the place. Proper drainage systems have also been put into place in the wet market and there is better ventilation and lighting. The food centre is housed in 3 different blocks. Despite the long history of the food centre, over 50 stalls at the current Whampoa Food Centre have been in operation since the 1980s and 1990s.

Titbit Corner...

Among the renowned and cheaply-priced food items at the food centre, its rojak (fruit and vegetable salad), nasi padang, and fish head steamboat are the top favourites of locals and foreigners alike.
